Blob Experiment

I explored converting still images from a dance routine into new illustrative forms to foster a new dialogue. By basing these illustrations on dance movements, I sought to animate them and potentially reconnect them to the original dancer through rotoscoping, assessing the impact of animation on the illustrations’ expressive potential.

Data to Animation

I experimented with transforming dance rehearsal data into illustrations using Runway’s DensePose and Google’s Pixel Body Interactive programs, aiming for an immediate visual transformation. However, the results did not fully align with my vision.

Movement and Photography

I conducted a qualitative analysis to locate expression and emotion in the body, documenting it through photography to create a new artistic expression. This process involved capturing dance movements with strategic lighting to determine if the muscle texture of the body influences expressive capacity, allowing me to integrate dance and design in an interdisciplinary fashion and capture the body’s dramatic and emotional essence.

Behind a Movement Designer's Process

For my graduation project, I explored an interdisciplinary approach to bridging art and design with the art of movement, leading to the inception of a new creative discipline I call ‘Movement Design.’ This discipline is grounded in a manifesto that outlines the values and principles guiding a Movement Designer, emphasizing the importance of emotion, expression, and body communication in society. To adhere to these principles, designers must approach their work interdisciplinarily, starting from dance or movement, ensuring that the artistic output is always traceable to expression and emotion. In pursuit of my artistic trajectory within Movement Design, I engaged in several experiments:
